King of Mexican boxing, Canelo Alvarez, apologized to Lionel Messi after accusing the Argentine national team superstar of insulting his country. Previously, the super middleweight world boxing champion was angry. He accused Lionel Messi of stepping on the jersey of the Mexican national team.
Canelo Alvarez’s anger was triggered by a video recording that went viral on social media after the Argentina vs Mexico match in the Group C phase of the 2022 World Cup on Sunday (27/11/2022). In the video, Lionel Messi can be seen stepping on and shifting the Mexico national team jersey which was lying on the floor of the team’s locker room.
Seeing the recording, Alvarez was inflamed and threaten Lionel Messi. Messi was considered to have insulted Mexico. “He should have prayed to God that I didn’t find him,” Alvarez wrote on Twitter. However, Canelo Alvarez’s accusations turned out to be untrue.
After the drama was widely discussed, the captain of the Mexican national team, Andres Guardado, gave an explanation. According to Guardado, the jersey was his and it was deliberately placed on the floor to be washed.
“I know what kind of person Messi is,” Guardado said. “It was agreed with the staff that the jersey will be placed on the floor if it is covered in sweat, be it our team’s jersey or the opponent’s. Canelo doesn’t know it’s a locker room. It looks ridiculous to me. The jersey (which Messi stepped on) is mine. I exchanged it for Leo (Messi),” the captain added.
Canelo Alvarez finally realized the misunderstanding. The Mexican boxing king apologized to Lionel Messi and the entire Argentine public. “These past few days I have been carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place,” Canelo said on Twitter.
“For that, I want to apologize to Messi and the Argentine people. Every day we learn something new, and this time it was my turn. I wish both teams success in their match today, and here we will continue to support Mexico until the end,” concluded Canelo.
Mexico have to stop their steps at the 2022 World Cup after not being able to qualify for the knockout phase. Mexico failed to qualify after only finishing third in Group C standings with four points because they lost on goal difference from Poland. Poland and Argentina are the two teams that have the right to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup as representatives of Group C.
