Didier Deschamps admits that his team was a bit lucky after beating England in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
“It’s amazing, it’s a big game,” Deschamps said as quoted by espn.
“We were up against an excellent English team who were strong technically and physically,” he continued.
“It’s brilliant for the boys to be in the top four again. At times like these you wish time could stop for a while.”
“But tonight we will enjoy it. We were a bit lucky even though we gave away two penalties. We defended our lead with our heart and guts,” said Deschamps.
In this match Olivier Giroud was also able to pass Thierry Henry’s record as France’s all-time leading scorer.
“Tonight’s goal, his 53rd, was even better [than matching Henry]. Just before I had the chance I should have hit harder and scored,” Giroud was quoted as saying by espn.
“I thought I might get another chance, and when it came to me it was amazing to score”, continued Giroud.
“You have to keep believing. [Antoine Griezmann] gave me a super ball, it’s very good for the team, it’s amazing,” he continued.
“We know the potential of this young England team. They have everything, but we played a solid game, we tried to hurt them on the break. We did it with all our mental strength.”
