Novak Djokovic on Sunday won his tenth Australian Open 2023, bringing the number of Grand Slam titles in his career to 22.
The Serbian beat Stefanos Tsitsipas by 3 sets to 0 and is back at number one in the world rankings. However, Djokovic insisted that he does not want to stop there.
In the press conference after the decision, he admitted that he feels capable of continuing to dream of the most important trophies.
“I feel great pride and satisfaction. When I went to my box, I broke down emotionally, especially when I hugged my mother and brother.” Djokovic said.
“The injury and other things that happened could take away my concentration, so I walked away from all that.”
“It took enormous mental energy to stay present and focused. If you go back in time, two and a half weeks ago, I didn’t think I had a great chance of winning the title because of how my leg felt. I had to survive every game.
“The good thing about Grand Slams is that we have a rest day and that allowed me to recover and get all the treatments I needed.” Djokovic added.
The 35-year-old man was unable to compete in last year’s Australian Open after being deported from the country because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19.
“I really wanted to go back to Australia, I really like being here. Given my track record, I knew I had a chance. I finished last season in the best possible way and had a great preparation.” Djokovic said.
“After what happened last year, I was more nervous about how it was going to be received, but overall it was a positive experience.
“But things happened, there was the situation with my father, which was not easy to manage.” he added.
