10 Serious Penalties that FIFA Has Potentially Handed Down on Indonesia After the Draw for the 2023 U-20 World Cup Was Canceled

The 10 severe penalties that FIFA could potentially impose on Indonesia after the cancellation of the 2023 U-20 World Cup draw will be discussed here. Exco PSSI, Arya Sinulingga, has announced the cancellation of the draw on Sunday (26/3/2023).

The 2023 U-20 World Cup will be held from 20 May to 11 June 2023. The draw for the group phase is supposed to be held on 31 March 2023.

However, FIFA made the decision to cancel the draw for the 2023 U-20 World Cup. Arya cited Bali’s refusal, Wayan Koster, as one of the reasons FIFA canceled the draw.

Along with this cancellation, there are several detrimental impacts that could come to Indonesian football. PSSI noted that there were at least 10 penalties that FIFA could potentially impose on Indonesia because of this cancellation.

The first is the anxiety of being frozen by FIFA. Then, secondly, there is the potential for criticism from other countries for not carrying out FIFA’s mandate properly.

Third, along with this cancellation, Indonesia cannot carry out activities on the FIFA calendar. Fourth, Indonesia will potentially not be chosen again by FIFA as the host of sporting events.

Fifth, it was dropped from the 2034 World Cup host candidate. Meanwhile, sixth, FIFA is considering Indonesia not to host sporting events, including the Olympics.

Seventh, Indonesia is criticized for acting discriminatory because it mixes sports with politics. Eighth, more than 500 thousand players, coaches, referees and clubs will lose their livelihood if Indonesian football stops.

Ninth, the Indonesian National Team at all levels, namely U-16, U-19 and U-20 are prohibited from participating in international events with a potential loss of up to IDR 10 trillion. The 10th, League 1, League 2 and League 3 will no longer exist in Indonesia.

The chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir, will discuss this with related parties, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Apart from that, he will also report this to President Jokowi to discuss this matter.

“The general chairman of PSSI will also report to the President at the first opportunity to find a solution to all of this both in diplomacy and foreign policy for how to save Indonesian football which we love,” said Arya in a press conference at the GBK Arena, Sunday (26/3 /2023).

If it is canceled, of course it can have a negative impact on Indonesia. Indonesian football will probably be frozen. In addition, there are several other international sanctions, including refusal to hold sporting events in the future.

“We do not rule out the possibility that there will be consequences that must be accepted by Indonesia and PSSI due to problems that have occurred in connection with the process of organizing the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia,” said Arya.
