Juan Martin Del Potro Hasn’t Give Up On Returning To The World Of Tennis

Juan Martin del Potro will continue training to see if his body will be able to cope with a potential return to professional tennis towards the end of this season.

The former world number 3 has not played a single match since losing in the first round of the 2022 Argentina Open in what turned out to be a very emotional match after the tennis player at that time was not sure if he could ever return to tennis again.

The Argentine’s career has been hampered by multiple injuries with his most recent injury to his knee. He has undergone eight operations since the 2010 season in order to extend his career in the world of tennis. One on the right wrist (2010), three on the left wrist (2014 – 2015), and four on the knee (2019 – 2021).

The 34-year-old former tennis player could easily end her career considering what she has accomplished in the world of tennis. He has won 22 titles, including the 2009 US Open title, and has bagged ten wins over world number 1 tennis players. He also pocketed prize money reaching nearly 26 million US dollars.

However, the former Argentine tennis player has opened the door for opportunities to return to competition by targeting action at the US Open this season. In a recent interview, he confirmed that he was ready to test his body one more time.

“I love tennis, it’s never been a problem to pick up the racket and see how I feel. My physical and knee problems are things I deal with on a daily basis. I will keep the opportunity open, at least until the US Open as I said,” said del Potro.

“It was the most special tournament for me. I still have time, I will start training. See how my feet and knees react and whether I can do it or not.”

While he is not seen on the field competing, he maintains a connection to the sport he loves. Earlier this month, he was in Sao Paulo for the Roland Garros junior series tournament for which he was an ambassador. Back then, he gave advice to those participating.

“The only thing I’m lacking is being world number 1,” admits Juan Martin del Potro. “It’s always been a dream and I’m working hard on it. I feel proud of my career but I never made it because there was always Federer, Nadal or Djokovic.”

“When I look at my rankings and seasons and who is fighting to be world number 1. I see that is a very beautiful thing, that they didn’t let me succeed, that dream.”

Del Potro is one of the few players to have won four or more wins against every member of the Big Three.
