NBA Launches New Collective Agreement Rules for Seven Years

The NBA will have new rules in its collective agreement. According to reports the deadline is now valid until 2030.

The main changes include a ban on certain signings for teams with wages exceeding the maximum wage cap and an increase from two to three two-way players. This refers to athletes who have a game limit and no formal contract.

The new NBA collective agreement included some rules that didn’t exist before. But for the league and the Players Association (NBPA) to reach a consensus, the current one had to be canceled. It was due to expire at the end of next season, but there was an option to end it now.

Another important point was to fight the absences of key players. For an athlete to compete for the season awards, he needs to play in at least 65 matches.

However, the number of games comes with some conditions. Basketball and one of the MVP candidates, Joel Embiid has been in 63 matches so far.

From 2023/24, a parallel tournament will take place. There will be eight teams in the contest in December, but with eliminations in single games. So the Final Four will be held in a neutral venue.

It’s likely to be Las Vegas, according to ESPN. However, matches will be played within the regular season. Only the finalists would finish the campaign with 83 games. Finally, the winners will have cash about $500,000 each.

The NBA and NBPA also agreed to increase the threshold for advance extensions. Before, it was 120%. Starting next offseason, it goes to 140%.

ESPN reported Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown as an example. Under the rules that ended, Brown could have $165 million over four years. However, under the new deal, he will be able to hit $189 million over four seasons.
