Bayern Munich assistant coach and the assistant coach of the German U21 national team Hermann Geralnd faced harsh criticism by Bayern legend Stefan Effenberg when he treated himself to numerous whisky and cokes.
“To be honest, I found his appearance questionable. He threw out a few jokes, but his appearance was still borderline,’ Effenberg said.
“As the assistant coach of the German U21 national team, he is responsible for the young players, at the World Cup in Qatar he was still there as Hansi Flick’s assistant coach.
“Then you can’t sit on a live show and have four whiskeys at 11 a.m, drink Coke because he has a huge role model function, which he may have forgotten after the third glass at the latest,” he added.
Gerland was drinking whiskey and coke when he rumbled against Joechen Sauer and targeted Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
“It happens that two people don’t get along. I had problems with Hasan. I was on campus and it was agreed that I would make sporting decisions with Jochen Sauer.” Gerland said.
“It all worked out wonderfully. But all of a sudden I realized that things weren’t going so well.” he added.
Geralnd was active at Bayern Munich for more than 20 years. He was coach of the second team and, from 2008, Gerland was assistant coach several times at Bayern, until the end of the 2021 season.
“It can’t be that a representative of the older generation is then celebrated for something like that. I can only shake my head. If something like that is approved, I have big problems with it,” Effenberg said.
“You have a responsibility in front of an audience of millions. That shouldn’t be celebrated. I don’t understand that at all. Where is the DFB? Other coaches have already been punished for it,” he added.
