Chelsea Vs Brentford

Own Goals (OG) are always a terrible mistake by any player that allows the opponent side to gain a lucky lead in crucial encounters, that may eventually turn out to be a horror for the entire team as it often turns out to be the deciding factor of the match.

Chelsea in their Premier League match against Brentford on 27th April experienced the fate of an own goal that made things worse for them as the match proceeded. The crowd at Stamford Bridge, London were in for an exciting match between two strongly matched sides as both sides are now bringing in their A-game to rise up the ranks in the Premier League standings.

Coming from a loss against Real Madrid, Chelsea walked onto the field with no major changes except Cesar Azpilicueta returning to the line-up for the game in place of Reece James, who will miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury. As for Brenford, Christian Norgaard dropped out after going off injured against Aston Villa and was replaced in midfield by Frank Onyeka.

As the match commenced, Chelsea as expected, were able to dominate the ball possession as they began to create a number of opportunities to score. However, things went topsy turvy for the Men in Blue when Azpilicueta inadvertently scored an own goal from a Brentford corner in the 37th minute, giving the Red & Whites the early breakthrough they needed.

From then on, Chelsea just struggled to hold themselves together as they failed to get back in the remaining minutes as the first 45 minutes ended with Brentford leading 1-0. The first half was fairly quiet with both sides struggling to produce quality attacking moments.

Chelsea were much better in the second half, and seemingly regrouped, making some key changes, bringing in substitutes Aubmeyang and Mudryk. Though the side seemed more stable than the first half, but they failed to score despite an abundance of chances.

78 minutes into the match, Mbeumo gave the second blow to Chelsea as he scored the first legit goal for Brenford, giving his side a double lead over the Blues. This goal just made things worse for Chelsea who were now under double pressure with just over 10 minutes of play left. However, nothing changed as Brendford were able to maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the game as the referee blew the whistle, giving the Brents a much needed 2-0 victory.

As a result of this win, Brentford now remain in the hunt for a European place while Chelsea, who have now lost two games in a row, is now ranked 11th with a score of 39 points. They will now face archrivals Arsenal in their next league game on 5th May at the Emirates Stadium, while Brentford host Nottingham Forest.
