Overthrow Augsburg, Borussia Dortmund Overtook Bayern Munich Position

Forward Sebastien Haller scored twice as Borussia Dortmund beat 10-man Augsburg 3-0 on Sunday to overtake Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga.

Sebastian Haller broke the deadlock in the 58th minute and scored his second goal six minutes from time.

Julian Brandt completed the win with a time goal in stoppage time.

Borussia Dortmund, whose last title was won in 2012 under coach Jurgen Klopp, are two points ahead of Bayern with 70 points.

The Bavarians suffered a shock 3-1 home loss to RB Leipzig on Saturday.

“We have suffered and we sweat a lot, not only this season,” Dortmund coach Edin Terzic was quoted as saying by ESPN.

“It’s now about taking the final step together with our fans in our stadium in our city and finally bringing the league trophy back to Dortmund.

“This is not a season of missed opportunities, but a season of setbacks. Now it’s about taking that final step,” he continued,

In the first half, Dortmund had 16 shots on target to Augsburg’s just one, but could not score even as the hosts trailed by 10 men following the sending off of Felix Uduokhai in the 38th minute.

Emre Can also hit the woodwork after the second half started, but they finally broke the deadlock through Haller in the 58th minute.

Augsburg responded immediately with a chance of their own but Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel did well to stop Irvin Cardona’s shot from 10 meters.

Haller, who missed most of the season after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last year, was able to score again via tap-in before Brandt completed their win.

Dortmund host Mainz on the final matchday while Bayern, who have won the last 10 league titles, travel to Cologne in their season finale.

“If some people had told me six months ago that I would be in this situation today, I would not have believed them,” said Haller, who underwent surgery and chemotherapy before returning to action in 2023.

“We’ve invested a lot and now we have the opportunity to achieve something big. There’s no magic. It’s about the investment. Then it comes.”
