Diego Lopez scored a first-half goal to give Valencia a crucial win over Real Madrid on Sunday that kept them clear of the relegation zone in a game marred by racist chants and a red card for Vinicius Junior.
With three matches remaining, Valencia are 13th in LaLiga with 40 points, five clear of the relegation zone.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, are third with 71 points, 14 adrift of champions Barcelona, who secured the title last week with four matches remaining.
Real Madrid are left with nothing to play for after crashing out of the Champions League following a 4-0 loss to Manchester City on Thursday in the second leg of the semi-finals.
Valencia, who are still fighting to avoid relegation, scored in the 33rd minute when Lopez scored from close range.
Real Madrid were down to 10 men in the final minutes after Vinicius was sent off following a scuffle with a Valencia player.
The Brazilian winger faced racist chants from fans at the Mestalla, which led to a few minutes of play being stopped in the second half.
“I don’t want to talk about football today, there is no point in talking about football today,” Real manager Carlo Ancelotti told Movistar Plus as quoted by ESPN.
“What we saw today is unacceptable. The whole stadium was screaming racist insults, I told the referee he should have stopped the game.”
Ancelotti said Vinicius’ reaction was understandable in the circumstances.
“I asked him if he wanted to continue playing, and he stayed in the game,” said the Italian coach.
“LaLiga has a problem here. For me Vinicius is the most important player in the world. LaLiga has a problem, this episode of racism has to stop the game.”
“All stadiums insulting players with racist chants and matches must stop. I’d say the same if we win 3-0, there’s no other way.
“Vinicius is very sad, he is angry. Something like this cannot happen in the world we live in,” he concluded.
