In one of the most shocking upsets in the ongoing Serie A season, Empoli scored a thumping victory over a much stronger Juventus on Monday. Juventus, who are one of the most celebrated sides in the modern football circuit have been handed down a major 4-1 upset by Empoili at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.
The Men in Blue (Empoli) Vs Men in Black (Juventus) match saw Francesco Caputo score twice for his team and additional goals from Sebastiano Luperto followed by Roberto Piccoli during the closing moments helped Empoli score a thumping victory. Federico Chiesa scored the solitary goal for Juventus in the 85th minute while they were already trailing by three goals.
Juventus did have a dominating start to the match with a couple of close shots at the goal and one goal being ruled out due to a foul, but they suddenly began to lose momentum as the clock ticked past the 15 minute mark. Arkadiusz Milik hit the crossbar following a corner in Juventus’s intense start to the game and Federico Gatti had a goal ruled out in a follow-up due to a foul in the buildup.
However, things went topsy-turvy for the side as Empoli were awarded a penalty for Milik’s foul on Cambiaghi. Amidst much protest from the Juventus players, the penalty was given and striker Francesco Caputo converted from the spot to give his team the early lead in the 18th minute.
Empoli didn’t have to wait too long to double the lead as defender Sebastiano Luperto scored the second Empolio goal in the 21st minute. The Men in Black never got a chance to regroup and revive from the double blow within a span of just three minutes. Thereon, Empoli did well to maintain the lead as the first half ended with a 2-0 scoreline.
Just two minutes into the second half, Caputo got his second goal of the match and the third for Empoli, tripling the lead over Juventus. The Men in Blue kept as much ball possession as possible as they wanted to offer no chance to Juventus to break through. It was only in the 85th minute that Federico Chiesa scored a consolation goal for Juventus, but the damage was already done by then.
Trailing by a margin of 3-1 with just five minutes left in the game, it was nearly impossible for Juventus to get back in the game, let alone pull off a miracle by any chance. While Empoli were content with the lead and a seemingly obvious 3-1 win, they seized another freak opportunity three minutes into stoppage time when Roberto Piccoli scored the fourth and final goal for Empoli to seal the victory.
In the end, Juventus, who are currently placed 7th in the ranks, were handed a shocking 4-1 defeat by the much lower ranked Empoli, who have now moved up to the 14th spot in the Serie A rankings. Juventus are now at 59 points from their 36 games played and Empoli are on 42 points with as many games played.
