Newcastle 0 - 0 Leicester - Premier League

The fans of Newcastle United were delighted this Tuesday as their team finally made it to the Champions League for the first time in two decades. Playing against Leicester City in front of their home crowd at St James’ Park, Newcastle were able to pull off a fighting draw that gave both teams a point each in the points table, allowing the latter to finish their league campaign in the top four. With 70 points up their sleeve from 37 matches, Newcastle City have therefore finished third in the rankings behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

The game was pretty evenly matched throughout and despite dominating the game, Eddie Howe’s team was unable to break the tie. They did have three chances to score during the game, but all three of their shots struck the post. However, the ultimate outcome was adequate for the Magpies to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

Miguel Almiron hit the post again for the home team three minutes before halftime, while visiting custodian Daniel Iversen skillfully deflected a long shot from Alexander Isak in the second half. Bruno Guimaraes also nearly gave Leicester the lead with a header off the goal line, but Nick Pope saved it with a diving save on Timothy Castagne’s acrobatic attempt.

As a result of the match, Leicester City have now dropped to the 18th spot in the rankings with 31 points, two points behind Everton. The draw did allow them to move one place above Leeds United on goal difference, but still remain in the relegation zone. They now must win their next bout against West Ham United on Sunday and also hope that Everton fail to beat Bournemouth. That way they could still have some hopes to make it past relegation.

Newcastle United on the other hand, are now four points ahead of the fifth placed Liverpool side, who are also done with their 37 league matches. However, Newcastle’s third place spot might still be in jeopardy as they are just 1 point ahead of the fourth ranked Manchester United, who are sitting at 69 points with still a match to play. If the Manchester Boys win their final league match, they switch places with Newcastle to take the third spot. Nonetheless, Newcastle United are still assured of a Champions League opportunity since they will remain in the Top 4 come-what-may!
