Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets will join former team-mate Lionel Messi at Inter Miami CF this summer.
Inter Miami has announced the arrival of the former Spain international on its social media accounts.
Sergio Busquets’ contract with Barcelona expires at the end of June and, after announcing his decision to end his 18-year stay at Spotify Camp Nou, he has considered offers from the United States and Saudi Arabia.
As sources have told ESPN, Busquets will sign a two-and-a-half year contract pending final revisions and signing.
ESPN sources add that Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba has also received interest from Miami and will make a decision on his future in the coming weeks after winning the UEFA Nations League with Spain.
Busquets held negotiations with Saudi sides Al Nassr and Al Hilal in recent weeks but opted for Miami’s bid, which sources said was financially lower, having previously spoken of his desire to play in the US.
He will be reunited with Messi, who announced his intention to move to MLS earlier this month after the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
Busquets and Messi spent 13 years playing together in Barca’s first team before Messi moved to PSG in 2021. The two have remained close friends ever since.
Sergio Busquets made a total of 722 appearances for Barça, winning nine league titles and three Champions League titles during that time.
He also made 143 appearances for Spain, winning the 2010 World Cup and the European Championships in 2012 before announcing his retirement from international football after last year’s World Cup in Qatar.
Busquets and Messi are also in the running to play with Jordi Alba, who reached an agreement with Barcelona last month to end a contract that expires in 2024, one year early.
Alba has also attracted interest from Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and clubs in Saudi Arabia, with sources telling ESPN he will spend time with his family after the Nations League ends before making a final decision.
Alba’s desire to represent Spain at next summer’s European Championships, coupled with the fact that the couple are due to give birth to their third child in July, could influence his next move.
