Jose Mourinho Banned for 10 Days in Serie A

Jose Mourinho wore a microphone when his AS Roma side faced Monza in May, but he could not resist insulting the referee after the game and was handed a 10-day ban on the sidelines on Wednesday.

The penalty was the result of Jose Mourinho’s fuss with referee Daniele Chiffi during the AC Monza vs AS Roma match on May 4, 2023.

It is known that the match was colored by chaos after referee Chiffi showed a second yellow card to AS Roma player Zeki Celik.

The AS Roma fullback received a second yellow card in just four minutes.

According to The Special One, the referee’s decision to expel the player was considered inappropriate.

The reason is, the Turkish national player was tired of chasing the ball and accidentally slipped and violated the AC Monza guard.

Not only playing 10 players, AS Roma failed to redeem the Champions League next year because the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mourinho will miss their Serie A opener due to suspension and will also be handed a €50,000 euro ($54,610) fine for comments made about referee Daniele Chiffi, the Italian FA said.

Mourinho was harshly critical of Chiffi after Roma’s 1-1 league draw against Monza, labeling him “the worst referee I’ve ever met in my entire career.”

The 60-year-old Portuguese came into the game trying to do everything he could to avoid being penalized by the officials.

“I’m not stupid, you know,” Mourinho said at the time. “Today, I went into the game with a microphone. I recorded everything. From the moment I left the locker room, to the moment I came back. I protected myself.”

But the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach, who is no stranger to clashing with referees, still sparked hot water for his comments after the game.

“I stopped working [talking] 20-30 minutes from the end because I knew he would give me a red card for anything. I didn’t give him a chance, I decided no, that was enough,” Mourinho said.

“He’s terrible, he doesn’t make human connections with anyone, he has no empathy, he gives a red card to a player who slipped through fatigue in the 96th minute.”

This is the second sanction Mourinho has received in a week after UEFA banned him for four Europa League matches for using abusive language towards referee Anthony Taylor in his team’s defeat to Sevilla in the competition’s final.

Roma have also been fined €50,000, in addition to a €55,000 fine UEFA has also imposed on the club.
