Manchester United have completed the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea, the club announced on Wednesday.

Mason Mount has signed a contract until the end of the 2027-28 season, with the option to extend for another year.

ESPN reported last week that the two clubs had reached a deal worth £55 million ($69.5 million) with an additional £5 million ($6.3 million).

As sources have told ESPN the bonus is because Chelsea are “a lot reliant” on Mason Mount’s performances and success at United.

“It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career,” Mount said in a statement, as quoted by ESPN.

“Everyone can see that the club has made great strides forward under Erik ten Hag. After meeting with the manager and discussing his plans, I am very excited for next season, and ready for the hard work that is expected here.”

The 24-year-old is the Red Devils’ first signing of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United director of football John Murtough said: “Mason is a very intelligent footballer and has so many fantastic technical qualities that will add to our squad in a significant way.”

“We have admired his talent for a long time so we are delighted he has chosen to take the next step in his career here at Old Trafford.”

Mason Mount leaves Chelsea for 18 years after joining the West London club’s youth team at the age of 6.

Mount managed to win the Champions League in 2021, setting up Kai Havertz’ goal against Manchester City in the final.

The England midfielder also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup during his 195 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 33 goals and providing 37 assists.

Mount issued a message to Chelsea supporters on Tuesday as he said goodbye to the club.

“I feel you deserve more than written statements so I wanted to tell you in person how grateful I am for all of your support over the last 18 years,” Mason Mount wrote on his personal Instagram.

“I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision but it’s the right one for me at this point in my career.”
