Verstappen: Baku breakthrough helped current F1 dominance

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Formula 1 world champion, claims his current dominance is the result of a setup breakthrough. He insists that up gradation at Azerbaijan Grand Prix earlier this season has helped him retain the dominant form.

Currently, the championship leader have 339 points while his team mate -Sergio Perez – lags behind on second place with 201 points. He won the season opening race and currently won the ninth consecutive race at Dutch Grand Prix. Currently, he shares this record with Sebastian Vettel.

Earlier in the season, he swapped places with Mexican at Saudia Arabian and Azerbaijan GP. Reflecting on his second place at the latter venue, he revealed about his experiments with setup options.

Verstappen claims that his experimentation yielded fruitful results on his RB19. It eventually resulted in continuous record breaking winning streak in F1.

“I think I learned a lot from the race in Baku, how to do some [different] things with the car, how to set it up,” Verstappen explained.

“Of course I didn’t win that race in Baku, but I actually really tried a lot of stuff and different tools in the car, and that’s why in the race it was a little bit inconsistent.

“But at one point I got into a good rhythm with what I found.

“I damaged my tyres a bit too much, but I was like, ‘okay, that’s quite interesting for the next races’. And I basically implemented that and it has helped me on every track.”

Verstappen revealed about his re-styling his driving for the better part of the season. This also helped him in his winning streak which he was unable to achieve in his earlier years with Red Bull.

He believes that he achieved a balance between risk and reward. Additionally, further knowledge of current RB19 offered stringent control and reward. “It was a lot about risk management,” he said.

“I mean, when I compare it to like a few years ago where I’m not fighting for the championship, I’m driving completely different for sure.

“But that’s fine. I mean, even while driving like this, I know that I have a car which is capable of a lot.

“That probably helps to be a little bit more in control, I guess.”
