Iga Swiatek promises to fight again after losing first place

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek reacted to the disappointment of missing out on his world No. 1. Spot after he was knocked out of the 2023 US Open.

The tennis player, who spent 75 consecutive weeks at world number 1, will be replaced by Aryna Sabalenka after the world number 2 went further than the Polish national in this season’s US Open. In the fourth round, she squandered a one-set lead before losing to Jelena Ostapenko.

There is no doubt that the loss hurt the 2023 French Open champion and many have questioned how the tennis player’s performance dropped so drastically against Ostapenko. But after days of trying to digest everything that happened, the 22-year-old penned a message of determination and vowing to pick up from the setbacks and come back stronger.

“A season and a half is a time to observe and feel how much people talk and write about defending, defending titles, rating points. I’m sometimes surprise to start thinking like that because of this. But I don’t need to defend anything and this is a positive moment to write down a few things in my mind,” Swiatek wrote via Twitter.

“Furthermore, sport is a constant cycle of change like everyday life, we can win or lose, like that, it’s very simple. New season, next tournament, new opportunities, to get, achieve, not keep something.”

Despite expressing a desire to fight after being knock out of the US Open, the four-time Grand Slam champion also shared how she will focus on herself in order to improve herself. Apart from that, he thanked the fans for their support during his time as world number 1 tennis player.

“During the tournament in North America, I can win and achieve more, that’s for sure. I know some of you are expecting more, many of you are expecting me to defend the world number 1, the title,” added Iga Swiatek.

“But I stick with my mindset, when I work hard, I develop myself and do my job, I will create more chances to win, to achieve my targets, and not defend anything. The way to do that is to constantly focus on my high standards in what I do and learn from the best in the sport and from my team.”

“And yes, what an incredible journey it has been as world number 1! Thank you for being by my side all this time. I will try to appreciate the moment before I move forward and try to achieve more.”
