Newcastle United ruthlessly beat Sheffield United with an 8-0 win at Bramall Lane on Sunday, with eight different players scoring to bury the home side at the bottom of the Premier League table.
The win was Newcastle’s biggest away win and The Blades’ biggest defeat.
Eddie Howe’s men also became the first team in Premier League history to have eight different goalscorers in one match and moved up to eighth in the standings.
Newcastle showed no signs of fatigue after their first Champions League game in 20 years against AC Milan, and the Magpies led 3-0 at half-time before going on in the second half to score their biggest away win on record.
“We shared a bit of goals today. I thought we were really good from the start and when the goals came I felt confidence in the team coming back,” Howe told Sky Sports as quoted by ESPN.
“The biggest thing for us is that we really want to score goals and we’re not satisfied with three goals. I want that mentality to flow in the team.”
The Blades started on a positive note to give the home fans some optimism, but Newcastle took the lead when Anthony Gordon played a cut-back to Sean Longstaff and followed it up with a shot that ripped through the Sheffield goal.
Newcastle doubled their lead in the 30th minute from a corner when Dan Burn broke free from marking and headed Kieran Trippier’s cross at the far post.
Four minutes later, Trippier was again the provider from another set piece, this time from a free kick, when Sven Botman directed a header into the right side of the Sheffield United goal.
The English full-back then recorded his third assist of the match when he provided a cross to Callum Wilson who was standing free in front of goal.
Anthony Gordon scored Newcastle’s fifth goal from outside the penalty box, before Miguel Almirón scored Newcastle’s sixth goal using Bruno Guimarães.
Guimaraes then scored a goal of his own when the ball fell his way and he fired home, before substitute Alexander Isak completed the win with a stoppage-time goal.
Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom said his team needed to learn from the defeat.
“It was the nature of the performance that let us down… We can’t allow ourselves to fall behind in that way if we want to compete,” Heckingbottom said.
“It was a second half that disappointed me. Regardless of the mistakes that led to the goal, we need to make sure we learn from them. There were a lot of things I saw in the second half that I haven’t seen here.”
“Matches like this won’t define our season. It’s about collecting points. Even though there are many big things we have to learn, we also have to remain calm when facing matches like this.”
