Bayern Munich scored two goals in four minutes in the first half to fire them to a 4-3 win over Manchester United on Thursday and make a winning start in Group A of the Champions League.
Goals from Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry in the 28th and 32nd minutes put the hosts in control against injury-hit Manchester United, who have lost their last three games.
Manchester United was able to get a goal back in the 49th minute through Rasmus Hojlund’s effort.
Harry Kane’s penalty, awarded for a handball by Christian Eriksen, restored Bayern’s two-goal lead four minutes later before the match ended with a flurry of goals in the final minutes.
Casemiro scored from close range in the 88th minute but Bayern substitute Mathys Tel scored again in stoppage time before Casemiro scored another goal for United in the final movement of the match.
United, who lost 3-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion and Arsenal in their previous two games, have now conceded three or more goals in three consecutive games for the first time since December 1978.
But the match started well for the visitors when Eriksen almost scored in the fourth minute but his shot was blocked by Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.
A mistake by United goalkeeper André Onana gave Bayern the lead, and the Cameroon international misjudged Sane’s shot and let it pass past him and into the net.
With Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel serving a one-match suspension from last season and assistant Zsolt Loew on the bench, Bayern scored again through Gnabry in the 32nd minute.
Hojlund’s effort four minutes after the restart following United’s quick pass gave United some hope, but Bayern quickly extinguished the Red Devils’ hopes in the 53rd minute through Kane’s penalty.
“Disappointed because we had to stay on,” said United coach Erik ten Hag.
“If you score three goals at Bayern Munich, you have to get one point.
“We are in a period, things are going against us. We have to create our own luck. We have faced great teams in the last three games.”
At the end of the match, Casemiro was able to score from close range in the 88th minute and then headed the ball for their third goal in stoppage time, minutes after Bayern substitute Tel had scored against the Red Devils.
