Joonas Donskoi Announces NHL Retirement

Seattle Kraken forward Joonas Donskoi on Sunday has decided to retire from the National Hockey League (NHL).

The 31-year-old Finn is hanging up his skates after seeing his health jeopardised by multiple concussions over the years.

Donskoi confirmed his decision by posting a message of thanks on his Instagram page.

In a heartfelt statement, Donskoi expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had in the NHL and his excitement for the next chapter of his life.

He thanked his fans, teammates, and coaches for their support and reflected on the memories he had made during his time in the league.

“Thank you San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken. It was an honour to be part of these three world class organizations, cities and fanbases.” Donsokoi said.

“To all my teammates, coaches, trainers, doctors, front offices, and fans: thank you for the best years of my life.” he added.

Donskoi’s NHL journey began when he was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

After several successful seasons with the Sharks, he joined the newly formed Seattle Kraken through the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft.

In 2021-22, he was limited to two goals and 20 assists in 75 games with Seattle. He suffered a head injury during the Kraken preseason schedule in the fall of 2022.

That followed a 31-point (17-14) tally in 51 games for the Avalanche during the shortened 2020-21 schedule.

A fourth-round pick of the Florida Panthers (99th overall) in 2010, Donskoi came to North America in the 2015-2016 campaign after many seasons in SM-Liiga.

His last NHL contract, signed in the summer of 2019, was for four years and earned him an annual sum of US$3.9 million.

“After suffering multiple concussions over my career I’ve decided to retire from professional hockey,” Donskoi said.

“It is extremely hard to let go of something you have put your whole life into, but at this point I know it’s the right decision for my own well being and future.” he added.
