Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has apologised to his teammates and the club’s fans for his blunder in the 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Onana allowed Leroy Sane’s shot to squirm under his body in the 28th minute, giving Bayern a 1-0 lead. United went on to lose the match, despite fighting back from 3-1 down.
In a post on social media, Onana said: “I’m very sorry for my mistake in the game against Bayern Munich. I know that I let my teammates and the fans down.”
“I’m working hard every day to improve and I will do everything I can to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.”
“I want to thank my teammates for their support. We will learn from this and come back stronger.” he added.
Onana’s blunder was the first major mistake he has made since joining United in the summer.
He had previously been praised for his performances, including his role in United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League last month.
Erik ten Hag, the United manager, backed Onana to bounce back from his mistake.
“It is good that he is taking responsibility. But it is about the team. We have to learn from this and move on.” Ten Hag said.
“We all make mistakes. It is about how you react. I have no doubt that Andre will come back stronger.” Ten Hag added.
The Red Devils signed Onana from Inter Milan on a five-year deal, with the option of a further year.
The 27-year-old Cameroonian international has been one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in Europe over the past few years, and he is expected to be United’s number one goalkeeper next season.
United’s next match is against Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if Ten Hag keeps Onana in goal for that match.
