Lionel Messi’s Perspective: Explaining Why He Views the MLS League as Inferior to Europe

In a recent interview regarding his potential return to compete in the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi shared insights into his move to the MLS League and its contrast with European football. Messi, nicknamed La Pulga, shed light on his decision to join Inter Miami FC, David Beckham’s club, after his contract expired with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in June 2023.

Despite showcasing his prowess with 14 goals in 11 matches and leading Inter Miami FC to win the 2023 Leagues Cup, Messi candidly acknowledged the difference in the leagues’ quality.

“I was aware that I moved to a minor league. But much depends on how one approaches and competes in such a scenario,” Messi expressed to Star+, as quoted from the Mirror on Wednesday (6/12/2023).

While Messi’s remarks about the MLS being a “smaller league” did not elicit widespread comments, his contributions to his current club remain evident, underscoring his commitment to excel wherever he plays.

Messi’s desire to continue his international career was also emphasized, highlighting his aspirations to compete on the global stage, notably focusing on the upcoming Copa America.

“As long as I feel capable and can continue making a difference, I will do so. Presently, my focus is on preparing well for the Copa America and performing at my best,” Messi added.

Moreover, there’s speculation that Messi might make a return to participate in the 2026 World Cup, set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This insight offers a glimpse into Lionel Messi’s perspective on the MLS League compared to European football, emphasizing his willingness to adapt and excel despite acknowledging the perceived differences in league standards.
