Liverpool and Chelsea are said to be more worthy of playing in the 2023-2024 Champions League than Manchester United and Newcastle United. This was conveyed by European football expert, Alberto, on his personal Twitter alias X account, @SemperFiCity.
According to Alberto, the Red Devils – Manchester United’s nickname – and The Magpies – Newcastle United’s nickname – are two embarrassing clubs. Because the two Premier League clubs are both caretakers in the 2023-2024 Champions League group phase.
“Chelsea and Liverpool deserve to get away with these two embarrassing clubs (Manchester United and Newcastle United),” wrote Alberto on his personal X account, @SemperFiCity, quoted Thursday (14/12/2023).
Manchester United finished at the bottom of Group A of the 2023-2024 Champions League with a collection of only 4 points from 6 matches. They are below Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray who occupy the top three positions.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United is at the bottom of Group F with a collection of 5 points from 6 matches, behind Borussia Dortmund, PSG and AC Milan. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Liverpool, who are both not appearing in the 2023-2024 Champions League, are considered more worthy than Setah Merah and The Magpies.
The failure of Manchester United and Newcastle United itself puts the Premier League (English League) in danger of failing to send 5 representatives to the 2024-2025 Champions League. For those who don’t know, the Champions League starting from the 2024-2025 season will use a new format with the ‘Swiss Model’ system.
Later, the number of participants in the 2024-2025 Champions League will be 36 clubs, aka an increase of 4 clubs, different from this season and the previous one where 32 clubs participated. A total of 4 additional clubs participating in the 2024-2025 Champions League were taken via different routes.
One ticket is intended for the club ranked 3rd in the European league competition which is ranked 5th in the UEFA 2023 ranking, now occupied by France (Ligue 1). Another ticket belongs to the domestic league champion who qualified via the Champions Path route, which is followed by clubs from countries with a UEFA coefficient of 10 or below.
The remaining two tickets will be contested by two associations/countries based on the performance of their clubs in European competitions in the previous season. Thus, the Premier League has the potential to send 5 representatives at once after previous editions only had the top 4 clubs.
The new format for the 2024-2025 Champions League will no longer use a group system and preliminary rounds. However, this event will use a single league format, where each club will play 8 matches against 8 different opponents (4 home, 4 away).
