Lisa Rumbewas Passed Away, Indonesia Lost Legendary & Inspirational Weighlifter

Legendary Indonesian lifter, Lisa Rumbewas, died at Jayapura District Hospital, Papua, on Sunday (14/1/2024) at 03.00 am local time. Lisa Rumbewas, who was born in Biak on September 10 1980, is one of the best weightlifters that Indonesia has ever had. Lisa has presented various brilliant achievements for Indonesia, including three Olympic medals, namely silver in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 and bronze in Beijing 2008.

Condolences for the legend

The passing of Lisa Rumbewas has not only saddened the Indonesian weightlifting world. Other sports also mourned the passing of the legend. The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) said that Lisa was a figure who inspired all sports people, not just in weightlifting.

“Lisa has provided inspiration and positive energy for the development of national sports. Not only in weightlifting, but Lisa’s enthusiasm and struggle will be remembered by all sports people and the Indonesian nation,” wrote PBSI’s official X account.

The inspirational figure

Lisa Rumbewas is a big name in the world of weightlifting. Apart from collecting three Olympic medals, Lisa also has one SEA Games gold medal and one World Championship silver medal.

Lisa’s spirit to make the Red and White proud on the world stage has also become an inspiration for other athletes, including disabled athletes from Indonesia. The Indonesian powerlifting athlete who won gold at the 2022 ASEAN Para Games, Atmaji Priambodo, uses Lisa as his role model. Atmaji also hopes to follow in Lisa’s footsteps, namely appearing on the highest stage (Paralympics) and bringing home a medal for Indonesia. “Hopefully we can take part in (the 2024 Paris Paralympics),” said Atmaji during the sidelines of the 2022 ASEAN Para Games in Solo, August 2022.

Tributes to Lisa Rumbewas also came from the General Chair of the Central Indonesian National Olympic Committee (KONI), Lt. Gen. TNI (Ret.) Marciano Norman. Marciano said that Lisa’s achievements and services will always be a motivation for Indonesian lifters.

“As General Chair of the Central KONI and representing the sports achievement community, I express my condolences. Hopefully the late Lisa will find a noble place next to the Most Merciful God and her services as a sports patriot will always be remembered, as well as motivating Indonesian lifters to achieve world achievements,” said Marciano Norman.
