Bayern Munich and Thomas Tuchel officially ended their collaboration after receiving a series of bad results. The peak came after Bayern Munich received three consecutive defeats from Bayer Leverkusen, Lazio and VfL Bochum.
The coach who was appointed on March 24 2023, was originally contracted until June 30 2025. However, because Die Roten experienced a decline in performance, his role as coach officially ended at the end of this season.
Thomas Tuchel has led Bayern Munich in 33 matches in all competitions this season. His achievements were quite good, achieving 23 wins, 3 draws and 7 losses. Following are Bayern Munich’s seven defeats in all competitions when coached by Thomas Tuchel in 2023/2024.
- Dani Olmo scored a hat trick against Bayern Munich in the final
Playing at home, Bayern Munich had to accept a painful defeat from RB Leipzig in the 2023/2024 DFL Supercup final. The match, which was held on Sunday (13/08/2023), ended 0-3 in favor of RB Leipzig. This defeat was the first for Bayern Munich at the start of this season.
Dani Olmo emerged as the star in that match because he scored three goals in one match. It was his first hat trick while defending RB Leipzig. Meanwhile for Die Roten Bullen, their victory over Bayern Munich brought them the DFL Supercup trophy for the first time.
- Humiliated by a club that plays in the third caste
Bayern Munich lost to Saarbrucken, a third caste club in the German League in the second round of the 2023/2024 DFB Pokal. Rudiger Ziehl’s men won with a score of 2-1 in the match played at the Ludwigsparkstadion. Bayern Munich’s chance to win another trophy was lost because of that defeat.
Having fallen behind through a goal from Thomas Muller, Saarbrucken turned things around by scoring goals from two different players. They are Patrick Sontheimer and Marcel Gaus. This victory had a positive impact on the next match when they beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 16 of the DFB Pokal.
- Become a goal scorer when meeting Eintracht Frankfurt
After achieving seven consecutive wins, Bayern Munich suffered a crushing defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt in Week 14 of the Bundesliga. Playing in front of 58,000 spectators, Bayern Munich had to give up with a score of 5-1. It was Bayern Munich’s biggest defeat this season.
The five Eintracht Frankfurt goals were scored by four different players, namely Omar Marmoush, Junior Dina Ebimbe, Hugo Larsson and Ansgar Knauff. Omar Marmoush was the best player in that match because he recorded 1 goal and 2 assists. Meanwhile, from Bayern Munich, Joshua Kimmich scored the only goal.
- Fell down at home after losing to Werder Bremen
Thomas Tuchel’s troops suffered their first home defeat in the Bundesliga this season in week 18. The defeat was obtained after defeating Werder Bremen 0-1 in the match which took place on Sunday (21/01/2024). It was Werder Bremen’s first win over Bayern Munich in the last seven meetings.
The only goal in the match was scored by Mitchell Weiser after receiving a pass from Marco Friedl. Both are former Bayern Munich players. Mitchell Weiser was in the Die Roten uniform from 2012 to 2015, while Marco Friedl joined the youth team from 2013 to 2019.
- Defeat the closest competitor to win the championship title
Coming to BayArena with the best squad, Bayern Munich could not overcome the ferocity of Bayer Leverkusen. Winning 3-0, Bayer Leverkusen managed to extend their unbeaten record this season. As well as widening the gap with Bayern Munich in the 2023/2024 Bundesliga standings.
Bayer Leverkusen’s three goals were scored by Josip Stanisic, Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong. Combined, the three players have scored 17 goals for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this season. Alejandro Grimaldo, who was only brought in on July 1 2023, is considered to have contributed a lot to the team.
- The defeat against Lazio made Bayern Munich’s steps harder
Bayern Munich has always performed well in the 2023/2024 European Champions League group stage without losing. However, when they met Lazio in the round of 16, Die Roten lost with a score of 1-0. This defeat made Bayern Munich’s steps to qualify for the next round even more difficult.
Ciro Immobile became Lazio’s hero after successfully executing a penalty in the 69th minute. It was the fourth goal in the European Champions League this season from the player who was born in Torre Annunziata, Italy. The second meeting will take place at Bayern Munich’s home ground, Allianz Arena, on Wednesday (06/03/2024).
- Achieved two consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga
After losing to Bayer Leverkusen in the 21st week, Bayern Munich had another bad result when they faced VfL Bochum in the 22nd week. Playing at Vonovia Ruhrstadion, Bayern Munich lost 3-2. The last time Die Roten experienced two consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga was in 2019/2020.
Takuma Asano, Keven Schlotterbeck, and Kevin Stoger was VfL Bochum’s goal scorer. Meanwhile, two goals for Bayern Munich were scored by Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane. As a result of these two consecutive defeats, Bayern Munich had to end their collaboration with Thomas Tuchel.
This season has been very difficult for Bayern Munich. Failing to win the DFL Supercup, being eliminated from the DFB Pokal, falling far behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, and being threatened with not qualifying for the last 16 of the European Champions League, made Thomas Tuchel fired from the coaching chair. If they don’t win a single title, this season will be a bad one for Die Roten.
