Jurgen Klopp reveals the key to Liverpool’s success in their comeback win over Luton Town 4-1. According to him, the key is to ask the Reds players to be calmer when they are behind so they can maximize counter-attacks.
As is known, Liverpool managed to achieve a landslide 4-1 victory over Luton Town in Week 26 of the 2023-2024 Premier League. The match was held at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool, on Wednesday (21/2/2024).
Liverpool were trailing 0-1 after Luton Town scored a goal through Chiedozie Ogbene (12′). However, they were able to comeback through goals from Virgil van Dijk (56′), Cody Gakpo (58′), Luis Diaz (71′), and Harvey Elliott (90′).
After the match, Klopp admitted that he was happy to see the performance of his team. The German coach was impressed by the play of Luis Diaz and his colleagues who managed to face the challenge well after being left behind.
“I’m very happy with his performance, I’m very happy with a lot of things we saw tonight. Before the match, no one knew how the players would face this challenge, because this is a challenge,” said Klopp, quoted from Liverpool’s official website, Thursday (22/2/2024).
Furthermore, the 56 year old man revealed the key to Liverpool’s successful comeback against Luton Town. Among other things, he emphasized to his troops to forget about the events in the first half so as not to become a burden and maximize counterattacks.
“We have to ignore the fact we were 1-0 down, ignore the fact we wasted chances and take advantage of things that were already good in the first half and mount counter-attacks. For that we have to play in the right space, because counter-attacks only make sense if you win the ball back in a good area. That’s what the players did and the second half went well,” explained Klopp.
“Tactically, no (there was a change). No, it wasn’t necessary. I asked the boys to forget it. Some things that made us rush, delete them. That’s how it is. Let’s start anew; if we win the second half 1 -0, we get one point. If we win 2-0, we win the game, so the chances are very big,” added the man born in Mainz.
“We just asked the players to be calmer in moments like this so that we can resolve the situation according to our standards, our technical standards. That’s what I saw. Then the boys suddenly woke up (motivated). So, a good game “very, very good. A very special and special game,” he said.
With this victory, Liverpool collected 60 points from 26 matches in the 2023-2024 Premier League and remained at the top. The match against Luton was held first considering that Mohamed Salah and his friends will play the 2023-2024 English League Cup final this weekend at Wembley Stadium.
