Champions League Results: The Gunners Win on Penalties

Arsenal achieved positive results in the 2023-2024 Champions League. Mikel Arteta’s troops successfully eliminated FC Porto in the round of 16, Tuesday (12/3/2024).

The Gunners – Arsenal’s nickname – had to work hard to get a ticket to the quarter-finals. Winning 1-0 in the second leg meant that Declan Rice and his colleagues had to continue until the penalty shootout to ensure victory.

The match was tight from the start of the match. FC Porto, who is still superior on aggregate, played attacking to widen the distance from the host camp.

But on the other hand, Arsenal also looks ambitious to score goals in their home match this time. This must be done in order to maintain their chances of qualifying for the next round.

Arsenal, who were trying to catch up on aggregate, immediately stepped on the gas from the start of the match. However, the golden opportunity that Bukayo Saka got in the 13th minute was still able to be countered by Diogo Costa.

Porto changed to providing a threat through Evanilson’s action in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, his shot was narrowly wide of the target. Six minutes later, Evanilson again wasted the opportunity he got.

Arsenal finally managed to score a goal in the 41st minute. A goal from Leandro Trossard also gave the Gunners a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Entering the second half, a fast game was immediately demonstrated by both teams. Buying and selling attacks, Arsenal and FC Porto are still having difficulty scoring goals. In the 64th minute, Porto threatened Arsenal through Francisco Conceiçao, but his shot still bounced off the goal of the Gunners goalkeeper, David Raya.

Six minutes later, Porto threatened the hosts again. Francisco Conceiçao fired a low shot after taking advantage of a quick counterattack. However, goalkeeper David Raya was able to anticipate this attack. Until the normal time for the match ended, the score was still 1-0 for Arsenal (the aggregate was 1-1).

The match continued into extra time or extra time. Neither Arsenal nor Arsenal managed to break the deadlock, even though they had several chances, in two additional times.

As a result, the match continued into a penalty shootout. During the penalty shootout, Porto’s two kickers, Wendell and Galeno, failed to carry out their duties properly. Arsenal also won with a score of 4-2 after their kickers, from Odegaard to Declan Rice, successfully shot penalties.
