Three controversial VAR decisions occurred in the match of Indonesia vs Uzbekistan in the Asian Cup U-23 semifinals 2024, held on Monday (29/4).
Indonesia lost 0-2 to Uzbekistan in the semifinals of the Asian Cup U-23 2024 at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Qatar.
Uzbekistan took the lead after Husain Norchaev scored the first goal with left foot shot after continuing Muhammadqodir Hamraliev’s assist with a cross.
In the 86th minute, Uzbekistan managed to increase their lead to 2-0 through Pratama Arhan’s own goal at a dead ball situation.
However, Indonesia’s defeat was also due to three controversial VAR decisions which affected the mentality of the young Garuda players.
The following are three controversial VAR decisions in Indonesia vs Uzbekistan in the Asian Cup U-23 2024 semifinals.
The first controversial VAR decision occurred in the 27th minute when Indonesia got a free kick after Witan Sulaeman was tripped by an Uzbekistan player between the ends of the penalty box or outside the penalty box.
Referee Shen Yinhao initially gave a free kick to Indonesia, but after seeing the VAR and discussing with the VAR referee from Thailand, namely Sivakorn Pu-udom, regarding a possible penalty, the Chinese referee not just ignored the penalty possibility but also canceled the free kick decision to Indonesia.
The second controversial VAR decision occured in the 61st minute, Indonesia actually managed to take a 1-0 lead over Uzbekistan thanks to Muhammad Ferrari’s goal, but was ultimately overturned. Ferrari fired a shot from inside the penalty box after taking advantage of a wild ball after the Uzbekistan goalkeeper threw the ball away.
Referee Shen Yinhao then had time to check VAR again and finally canceled the goal for Indonesia because before Ferrari scored the goal, fellow Ramadhan Sananta was caught offside.
The third controversial VAR decision was in the 82nd minute when Indonesian U-23 National Team defender Rizky Ridho received a direct red card because he was seemed to have committed a violation when throwing the ball because his foot flew into the vital area of Uzbekistan player Jasurbek Jalliddinov.
