Former boxing champion Willie Limond has passed away at the age of 45. Limond, who enjoyed a successful career in the ring, suffered a seizure in his car just weeks after his comeback fight was announced.
Taking to social media, his son Jake – who is also a professional boxer and currently unbeaten with a 6-0-0 record – wrote as an Instagram story.
“My dad passed away in the early hours of the morning around 3am. He fought on for near enough 10 days. Warrior.” Jake posted.
Limond was a Scottish boxer who had an impressive professional career. He won 42 out of his 48 fights, with 13 of those victories coming by knockout.
Throughout his career, Limond held various titles, including the British super-featherweight, super-lightweight, and lightweight titles, as well as the Commonwealth lightweight and super-lightweight titles.
Limond’s passing came after he suffered a seizure in his car. He was found unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several days. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Limond tragically passed away.
The news of Limond’s death comes just weeks after he announced his comeback fight. He was scheduled to face Joe Laws in Glasgow on May 3, marking his return to the ring after a period of time away from professional boxing.
The boxing community and fans have expressed their grief and paid tribute to Limond.
Curtis Woodhouse, who fought Limond in a British light-welterweight title fight, expressed his devastation at the news.
Others have also shared their condolences and memories of Limond’s career.
“Absolutely devastated to hear the news of the passing of Willie Limond, a great fighter and a great man.” Woodhouse said.
“We stayed in touch after our fight and always had a laugh together. Absolutely gutted. Rest In Peace champ,” Woodhouse added.
