Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique said he wants Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez to stay on despite rumours of his departure at the end of the season.
Earlier this season, Xavi announced his intention to leave Barcelona at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. This sparked a managerial search, with Luis Enrique emerging as a frontrunner for his past success with the club, leading them to a treble in 2015.
“Xavi is a fantastic manager. He’s brought a certain energy and style back to Barcelona that’s exciting to watch.” Enrique said.
“I won’t speak for Xavi and his decision-making. But as someone who greatly respects him, both as a player and a coach, I can say that Barcelona needs him.
“Xavi understands the club’s philosophy, the expectations of the fans. He’s building something special there.” Enrique added.
According to reports, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is prioritising keeping Xavi. This has put the brakes on any potential move for Enrique.
Interestingly, Barcelona’s recent unbeaten run since Xavi’s announcement has strengthened Laporta’s resolve.
Enrique on the other hand, there have been rumours he might be interested in returning to Barcelona someday.
However, the Spaniard manager is currently managing Paris Saint-Germain, and it might be difficult to convince him to leave mid-contract.
“Barcelona will always hold a special place in my heart. But right now, I have a project here at PSG that I’m very committed to.” Enrique said.
“And again, Xavi deserves the chance to continue what he’s started at Barcelona.” he added.
Enrique coached Hernandez at Barcelona during the 2014-2015 season. This was a successful period for both as the team won the Champions League that year.
Xavi, he took the reins as manager of Barcelona for the 2022-23 season. His leadership proved fruitful, as he guided the team to claim both the Supercopa de España and the La Liga title, marking a successful first full season in charge.
