Aleix Espargaro, the esteemed MotoGP rider, has recently announced his decision to join the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) as a test rider for the upcoming season.
This unexpected move has sparked curiosity among the racing community, prompting many to wonder about the motivations behind Espargaro’s decision to transition into a testing role.
In an exclusive interview, Espargaro sheds light on the factors that influenced his choice and the exciting prospects that lie ahead.
“I don’t know why I have the feeling that my job is done in Aprilia,” Espargaro told Autosport.
“I did everything. I worked very, very hard during the eight seasons to help them to put them on top. My job is done.
“They have a good test rider with [Lorenzo] Savadori who is doing a great job. So it’s also a good motivation for me and a good opportunity to join HRC.
“They are not in their best moment for sure. If I can help them to be back on top it will be fantastic.” Espargaro added.
Espargaro believes that his contribution to HRC will extend beyond his technical prowess.
The Spaniard asserts that he can also significantly impact the team dynamics by fostering a more positive atmosphere in the garage for fellow race riders Joan Mir and Luca Marini.
“Imagine how difficult it is for a team as HRC that they were winning every single weekend and now they finish outside of the points almost every single weekend. So this is a shock, emotionally.” Espargaro said.
“For example Joan Mir is a world champion and now he is not able to finish races.” he added.
Espargaro has been a pivotal figure in Aprilia’s MotoGP program since 2017 and is widely recognised for his role in elevating the RS-GP from a perennial backmarker to a multiple race-winning bike.
His contributions have been instrumental in transforming the team’s performance and establishing the RS-GP as one of the most competitive bikes on the grid.
