Manchester United suffered a crushing 0-3 defeat to their eternal rivals, Liverpool. The two met in the third week of the 2024/2025 Premier League at Old Trafford, Sunday (1/9/2024).
Two of Liverpool’s three winning goals at the Dream Theater were scored by Luis Diaz in the first half. Mohamed Salah increased the away team’s lead in the second half.
Thanks to this result, Liverpool continued their positive trend early this season and are now ranked second in the standings with a perfect 9 points. On the other hand, Man United has suffered two defeats and has now dropped to 14th place.
Man United started the match impressively. However, Liverpool did not want to lose and managed to score a goal through Trent Alexander-Arnold’s action when the match had only been going on for seven minutes. Unfortunately, this goal was disallowed by VAR because Salah was considered offside.
Liverpool dominated the match. The away team also managed to open the lead in the 35th minute through Diaz’s action. His header following Salah’s cross failed to be blocked by Andre Onana.
Seven minutes later, Diaz again broke through Onana’s goal. Again starting with Casemiro’s mistake, Salah again sent an assist for Diaz who then fired a first-time shot into a goal. Liverpool’s three-goal advantage lasted until halftime.
Returning from the locker room, Liverpool were increasingly on top after Salah registered his own name on the scoreboard. His shot in the 56th minute successfully broke through Onana’s goal for the third time.
Man United itself did not want to give up even though it was far behind. Joshua Zirkzee had given a threat which unfortunately still failed to produce results.
No additional goals were scored by either team in the remaining time. The final score of 3-0 for Liverpool’s victory was the final result of this match.
