Sancho and Chelsea’s Champion Mentality: Coming Back from Falling Behind

Chelsea managed to make a comeback win against Tottenham. Jadon Sancho expressed his belief that his team could bounce back despite being 2-0 down in the first half.

Chelsea won 4-3 over Tottenham in the 15th week of the 2024/2025 Premier League. The match took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Sunday (08/12/2024).

In the match, Spurs were two goals ahead first. Dominic Solanke scored in the 5th minute, followed by Dejan Kulusevski in the 11th minute.

The Blues bounced back and responded with four spectacular goals. Jadon Sancho started the comeback with a goal in the 17th minute, followed by Cole Palmer’s brace in the 61st and 84th minutes.

Enzo Fernandez also contributed an important goal in the 73rd minute. Spurs were only able to reduce the deficit through Son Heung-min’s goal in the 90+6th minute.

Sancho showed his strong belief as Chelsea struggled to bounce back in the match against Tottenham. Despite trailing 2-0 at half-time, Sancho was confident his team would get back into the game after scoring the first goal.

“Being 2-0 down at half-time is not an ideal situation, but I knew we would get back into the game once we scored the first goal,” Sancho told BBC Match of the Day.

“At half-time the gaffer told us we were still in the game. I have a lot of confidence in the players, so I knew we would be aggressive in the second half.”

The Chelsea winger also revealed the team’s effective strategy for dealing with aggressive opponents.

“They play very aggressive, and we knew we could exploit the gaps if we got through their lines and dealt with their pressure,” he continued.

“The gaffer asked us to stay wide and create one-on-one chances.

“I’ve been working a lot on my finishing. The coaching staff and the players are giving me feedback.”

The 24-year-old finally scored his first Chelsea goal against Tottenham, becoming the first player to score in consecutive games.

“I know I have to prove a lot of people wrong,” Sancho added.

“I have worked very hard. I want to say thank you to the staff and the team for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.”

Sancho has also endured some struggles at Chelsea, but that does not appear to have affected his working relationship with Maresca.

The player is unlikely to start as the Blues continue their Conference League campaign against Astana.
