Philippines Breaks Thailand’s 52-Year Record in AFF Cup

The Philippine national team continues to create history in the 2024 AFF Cup after surprisingly defeating Thailand in the first leg of the semifinals at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, Manila, Friday (12/27/2024).

A goal at the end of the match scored by Kike Linares managed to ensure the Philippines’ victory over Thailand with a score of 2-1. Previously, the Philippines took the lead through Sandro Reyes in the 21st minute, but Thailand managed to equalize through a goal by Suphanan Bureerat at the end of the first half.

This victory is very historic for the Philippine national team. In addition to defeating Thailand for the first time in the AFF Cup, The Azkals also for the first time in 52 years managed to defeat the Thai national team.

Previously, the Philippines’ last victory over Thailand occurred in 1972 in Jakarta at the Jakarta Anniversary Tournament.

“The reason why our players won this historic match is because of their teamwork and their willingness to go out and give their all for the country,” Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President John Anthony Gutierrez said in an official statement.

Thailand actually dominated the match against the Philippines. However, Masatada Ishii’s team always had difficulty in making the final touches.

Philippines coach Albert Capellas admitted that he was proud that his team was able to beat Thailand, which has a FIFA ranking of 53 above the Philippines. However, the Spanish coach said that the Philippines’ struggle was not over.

“We never lose hope, because this team, they are fighters. They fight hard for this country. But, this is just one match,” Capellas said.

“I know this is a very important match, very special for everyone, for the country, for the fans, for everyone. However, we have only done half the job,” Capellas added.

This victory means the Philippines only need a draw to qualify for the 2024 AFF Cup final against Thailand in the second leg of the semifinals which will take place at the Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok, Monday (30/12/2024).
