Manchester United vs Real Sociedad: Winning 4-1, the Red Devils Qualify for the Quarterfinals

Manchester United achieved an important victory when they hosted Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Friday (14/3/2025). Playing in the second leg of the last 16 of the 2024-2025 Europa League, the team nicknamed the Red Devils won with a score of 4-1.

With a score of 4-1, Man United won 5-2 on aggregate over Sociedad. Therefore, the team coached by Ruben Amorim is entitled to a ticket to the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 Europa League.

Course of the Match

Real Sociedad took the initiative to attack first. Takefusa Kubo’s action was broken up by Patrick Dorgu, while Matthijs de Ligt fouled Oyarzabal to meet the ball.

De Ligt’s sweep on Oyazarbal was checked by VAR. The referee went to the monitor on the sidelines, then pointed to the 12-yard spot. Oyarzabal stepped up as the penalty taker, successfully sending Onana falling the wrong way.

Real Sociedad led 1-0 from Man United in the 10th minute. Aggregate 2-1.

Man United responded by making a dangerous attack. Casemiro’s pass to Bruno Fernades was continued with a horizontal crossing. Rasmus Hojlund was tackled, awarding a penalty to Man United.

Bruno Fernandes became the executor. Fernandes’ kick successfully nested into the bottom corner of Bilbao’s goal to equalize the score 1-1 in the 16th minute. Aggregate 2-2.

Man United pressed again. Bruno Fernandes’ cross to Hojlund was punched by Alex Remiro. The rebound was continued by Casemiro with a kick from outside the penalty box, although it went wide.

Another chance from Man United. Bruno Fernandes’ corner on the right wing met Dorgu outside the penalty box. Dorgu continued with a kick that soared just wide.

Dorgu threatened Sociedad again before half-time. Working together with Fernandes, Dorgu’s stab from the middle was continued with a low kick. Remiro still easily caught the ball.

After half-time, Man United got another penalty following Aritz Elustondo’s foul on Dorgu. Bruno Fernandes was again the executioner, unleashing a hard shot to the right side, which deceived Remiro.

Man United turned the lead 2-1 over Real Sociedad, 3-2 on aggregate.

A series of chances from Man United. Alejandro Garnacho cut off Remiro’s bad pass, got the ball back but his shot was caught. After that, Man United’s attack led by Hojlund ended with a cross to the far post. The ball failed to reach.

Disaster for Real Sociedad. Substitute Jon Aramburu was given a red card for committing a last-man foul on Dorgu. Sociedad now have to play with 10 men.

Man United missed two golden opportunities to add goals. Joshua Zirzkee’s shot from inside the penalty box was saved by Remiro. Zirkzee’s header following Noussair Mazraoui’s crossing failed to find the target.

The referee again awarded a penalty to Man United after Dorgu was fouled by Hamari Traore. However, after VAR was involved, the penalty was revoked.

Manchester United finished off Real Sociedad. Bruno Fernandes scored his third goal in the 87th minute, to increase Man United’s lead to 3-1 (aggregate 4-2).

A pass from behind was continued by Garnacho. Fernandes received Garnacho’s pass then finished with an accurate kick towards the far post.

Man United completed their victory over Real Sociedad with Diogo Dalot’s goal in injury time. Dorgu’s collaboration with Hojlund was ended by Dalot with a tap into the top corner of Sociedad’s goal.
