Century Casinos Incorporated receives approval for new development

In Canada, casino operator Century Casinos Incorporated has received official approval from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission for its plan to build the new Century Mile Racing Entertainment Centre just south of the city of Edmonton.

Colorado Springs-based Century Casinos Incorporated already runs four venues in the western Canadian province of Alberta including the recently-purchased Century Casino St Albert and was selected in September by Horse Racing Alberta to own, build and operate a new horseracing facility for the Edmonton area.

Century Casinos Incorporated, which is also responsible for a pair of casinos in the western American state of Colorado encompassing properties in the towns of Cripple Creek and Central City, explained that its Century Mile Racing Entertainment Centre will feature a one-mile horse racetrack complete with barns and visitor parking. The facility is to moreover offer a multi-level racing entertainments center with a slots-only casino featuring some 550 machines as well as indoor and outdoor racetrack viewing areas, an off-track betting area, food and beverage outlets and a grandstand.

“We are thrilled about this opportunity and believe the Century Mile [Racing Entertainment Centre] has the potential to be even more successful than Century Downs [Racetrack And Casino], the racetrack and racing entertainment center we opened two years ago in north Calgary,” read a statement from Erwin Haitzmann and Peter Hoetzinger, Co-Chief Executive Officers for Century Casino Incorporated. “We thank the Alberta Gaming And Liquor Commission as well as Horse Racing Alberta for their trust and approval and will work diligently with them and other authorities to begin and complete construction as soon as reasonably possible.”

Century Casino Incorporated, which additionally holds a 66% stake in the Casinos Poland-branded chain of eight casinos in Poland, revealed that its coming Century Mile Racing Entertainment Centre is to be located off of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway next to Edmonton International Airport and close to the city of Leduc. It will also sit near an existing regional shopping center, retail markets and the RedTail Landing Golf Club as well as multiple hotels that are either completed or under construction.

“The location has the potential to capture the south Edmonton and Leduc County markets,” read a statement from Century Casinos Incorporated. “The company estimates that the project will cost approximately $37.5 million based on the current exchange rate and construction will take approximately 15 months to complete. Commencement of construction of the Century Mile [Racing Entertainment Centre] project is subject to the receipt of development and other permits.”
