The champ is back – Winx close to a return

Australian superstar Winx will be back racing by mid-February and racing fans will get a chance to see her much sooner than that.

“She’s dead set three weeks away from a trial,” Winx’s trainer Chris Waller said.

“She’ll have a couple of trials.”

Waller is looking at a four-start autumn campaign, kicking off in the Group II Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

“Autumn comes around pretty quick this year so she’ll be racing mid-February,” Waller said.

“The Apollo, Chipping Norton, George Ryder and Queen Elizabeth. That’s the campaign at this stage.

“There are other options but that’s my preferred route.”

Winx won the Apollo Stakes last year, her sixth consecutive victory in a streak which has since stretched to 13.

Racing fans last saw the five-year-old daughter of Street Cry when she annihilated rivals by eight lengths in winning back-to-back Cox Plates at Moonee Valley on October 22.

With in excess of $9.3 million in prizemoney, her Group I collection currently consists of a Queensland Oaks, Epsom Handicap, Cox Plates (2), Chipping Norton Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, Doncaster Mile, George Main Stakes and Caulfield Stakes.

Winx hasn’t tasted defeat since finishing second behind Gust Of Wind in the ATC Oaks on April 11, 2015.
