Arsene Wenger: I never understood what that means

While his contract with Arsenal expires at the end of the season, Arsene Wenger assured that he would not work with a sport director, as he suggested the club management, as long as he will be manager of the Gunners.

“No, no, no. Sorry, I’m not ready to talk about it,” Wenger told media. “I’m the manager and as long as I’m manager of the Arsenal football club, I’ll decide what’s going on at the technical side. I do not understand and I never understood what that means.” the Frenchman added.

The Gunners have been without an academy director since Andries Jonker left last February, and Ivan Gazidis conscious of the demand for change. This statement comes as Arsenal general manager Ivan Gazidis planes to appointment a sports director to improve various areas within the London club. While the future of Arsene Wenger, at the end of the season is still not settled on the side of the Gunners.

“Progression or regression? Changes can go both ways. Maybe the time will come where the football manager will not a football specialist more.” Wenger said. “He will have enough computers around him to analyze the game and straight away he pushes on the button and out comes the team for the next game.

“And the supporters will have a word to say to make a change at half time on the internet. It might come. But I will not be there.” Wenger added.

The French manager has always had the final say on nearly every major decision made at the club since his arrival in 1996, even though other great clubs are increasingly spreading duties across at least two sides.

“O course. Who do you blame when it doesn’t work?” Wenger said. “When it doesn’t work here, I am blamed. So if I am blamed for decisions I haven’t made, it’s enough to be blamed for decisions you have made. For me, it’s like you write an article in the newspaper and somebody else signs for you. It’s similar.”  Wenger added.
