Auger-Aliassime becomes the seventh youngest tennis player

Auger-Aliassime became the seventh youngest tennis player ever to win an ATP Challenger title when he captured the Open de Sopra Steria in Lyon, France on last Sunday. Just a year ago, he and his support team at Tennis Canada were revealing that he was going to the professionals.

He would never have thought that this first victory would come so quickly. It was by taking Frenchman Mathias Bourgue 6-4, 6-1 in the final and he registered his name between the top tennis players Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on that list.

Speaking to the media, Auger says that he has ambition and he wants to win all tournaments in the world. “This is something I was considering perhaps more for next year. But I definitely want to win all the tournaments.” Auger said.

“I have not yet had time to sit down with my coaching staff to review the new goals for the end of the year. I think we will do more in one or two weeks.

“But it is certain that yes, it changes a bit the deal, ranked at 231st [it has jumped ranks in the ATP ranking], it brings me closer to qualifying in Grand Slam tournaments.

“Playing qualifying at flushing meadows would be a good thing. Then, trying to finish among the top 200 in the world at the end of the season, it would also be very good.” he added.

It is too early to confirm the young man presence in the main draw of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada, next August. However, he will be seen in several tournaments in Canada.

“I do not know yet if I will receive a pass. But it does not matter that I have to go through qualifying or not.” Auger said. “It will be a great opportunity for me to play in front of my family, my friends. The goal will be to arrive in super form and hope to play me best tennis.

“I’m back for the Winnipeg Challenger on July 10, followed by Gatineau and Granby. Then, it will be a possible invitation for the Rogers Cup and at the end of August, then the Vancouver Challenger.” he added.

At this point, Auger who is now training at the Montreal National Centre will know if he has made enough progress to qualify for the US Open.
