John Watson: Alonso has 32 million reasons to stay at McLaren Honda

In the face of McLaren-Honda’s once again lamentable performance, should Fernando Alonso end his career by the end of this 2017 season? Everybody knows that a Mercedes tub could be released at the end of the year, and this is not without attracting all covetousness.

However, former McLaren driver John Watson believes Fernando Alonso has 32 reasons to stay at McLaren-Honda in an obvious reference to the annual salary of the double world champion.

“I think Fernando Alonso has about 32 million reasons why he should stay with McLaren-Honda,” Watson told media.

“He might want at some point during his decline phase, and he’s definitely not in this phase right now to leave, and do something else, like running at Le Mans. This is an option for him but not for the moment.

“I think what happened at McLaren in 2017 was more result of what I would describe as mismanagement of the situation.” Watson added.

Another former McLaren driver Mark Blundell also thinks Fernando Alonso should not leave McLaren according to him without feeling the duty accomplished.

“I do not think it’s good for Alonso to go anywhere else. He is a quality driver, he has the caliber of a double world champion and it is for this reason that he needs to tap deep within himself to help the team progress. That’s why McLaren hired him. They hired him for all these reasons and I do not think he should look anywhere else. He should stay and do the job.” Blundell told media.

“To get out of this situation, McLaren needs someone with experience, and Alonso is the man who needs to really do the work for McLaren. Fernando needs to carry the team, to guide them, to be the motivating force that he is. We saw some comments for him, as a kind of self-celebration about his performance. F1 is a team sport.” he added.
