Fernando Alonso considers the contribution of the new Honda engine

McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso wanted to consider the contribution of the new motor specification brought by Honda to Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps and which will be installed on Stoffel Vandoorne’s car.

The Belgian will receive 35 penalty points in the operation while Alonso, left behind the previous engine, will have no penalty if he doesn’t have a problem by then.

Speaking to media, Alonso said he does not expect much from new Honda engine even thought after the Hungary Grand Prix.

“I was told not to expect much and I do not expect much,” Alonso said. “It is a minor thing, it doesn’t change the engine itself which is the same as in Hungary.

“I have no penalties, so there is nothing important to change in the engine to improve the performance by hoping for a big step forward.

“We will see, it’s very difficult race, and it’s two circuits in two weeks, with Spa and Monza, which are the ones where is needed. We’ll have to make a perfect weekend, there maybe changeable conditions, and we will have to take every chance that comes.” Alonso added.

Alonso, meanwhile, insisted that he does not want to think about his feature, despite a market of transfers that gradually seals.

“I will make decision about my future when I want it,” Alonso said. “And Stoffel change doesn’t change anything and his contract renewal makes sense, he’s doing a fantastic job for his first season and he will definitely improve his level next year for the team.” Alonso added.

Alonso’s engine specification will be improved but not as much as that of Vandoorne whose all components will be new. He didn’t have Vandoorne’s reliability improvement, avoiding to change a component that Honda did not name.

The engine manufacturer says that Alonso’s block will be a kind of Spec 3.5, while that of Vandoorne will be a 3.6. “Fernando and Stoffel will have an improved engine this weekend,” head of the Honda F1 project Hasegawa said to media.

“Unfortunately, Stoffel will receive a penalty at his National Grand Prix, but it is important that we make the improvements as soon as possible. It’s great to be able to bring a new advanced engine as fast and we will continue to do so for the rest of the season.” Hasegawa added.
