Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) hasn’t fought since November 2015, when he lost the middleweight belt to Canelo Alvarez, who later vacated the title to face Gennady Golovkin on Sept. 16. The four-division world champion plans on retiring at the end of the year, and wants to go out a champion.
Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs) earned this opportunity when he picked up the biggest win of his career last September when he retired Jesus Soto Karass. He has a tough, gritty, in-your-face style that could give 36-year-old Cotto trouble since he has been off for so long.
