Renault Formula 1 German driver, Nico Hulkenberg, is to be accompanied by Sainz Jr. on 2018 track. Carlos Sainz will replace Briton Jolyon Palmer for the complete season on loan by Red Bull F1 team.
“Carlos Sainz is a very promising driver who has been on our radar for some time.” Renault Sport managing director Cyril Abiteboul said.
“We feel Nico and Carlos will complement each other on and off track and help us push forwards on the grid.”
There is no space left at Red Bulls senior team as Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen are on the team for the next season. The contract with Renault will help Sainz career to grow and most likely will provide a chance to progress his position as a senior team member.
“To be a Formula 1 driver for a manufacturer team is an honour,” he said, “and I hope to reward Renault’s faith in me with my very best performances on track. The trajectory of Renault Sport F1 team is exciting and I’m proud to join at such an important time in their history.”
Red Bull motorsport director Helmut Marko said in a statement, “Carlos is a tremendous talent and he will benefit from working with a manufacturer team alongside a highly experienced driver.
“This will give Carlos a different challenge and we will be keenly watching his progress there as he remains part of the Red Bull family. This is very good development for both Carlos and Renault and will also allow us to bring a new talent into F1.”
The Sainz performance with Renault will define his position at Red Bull. He could seize a position as a senior driver for 2019 season. Because Ricciardo and Verstappen are likely to leave after new partnership of Red Bull with Japanese manufacturers of engines, Honda emerged for 2019 season. The Honda Engines have struggled for the last three years on tracks. The Renault wishes to close the partnership with Red Bull at end of 2018.
The Ricciardo had contracted till 2018 with Red Bull while Verstappen deal is valid until the end of year 2018. But his contract clauses may allow him to leave before the new partnership of Red Bull and Honda starts.
