The middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has revealed that he is not interested in fighting Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, but believes he would beat him again if fans call for them to fight a third time.
The Mexican champion captured the WBC and WBA middleweight titles by a majority decision in a classic encounter that all but guarantees a third installment in May, 2018.
Golovkin hasn’t fought since their second meeting in September but is set to face Steve Rolls at Madison Square Garden in New York on June 8.
Speaking to media, Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez believes that those mocks are a major reason why Alvarez is unwilling to face Golovkin a third time. The Mexican-American boxing trainer also believes that both boxers will have more competitive fight than before.
“I think that we have said – we as in when I was with Gennadiy – our team said a lot of things that maybe he is taking personal but that is the game and how you build things up. I hope that they fight again. They had good fights the first two times,” Sanchez said.
“If that is the case Canelo has a lot of avenues he can go down where he doesn’t really need Gennady but he is taking a big leap in Kovalev and a big leap in say Callum Smith. Those are tough fights but he is a young man who wants to be tested.” Sanchez added.
Alvarez failed two drug tests after his first bout with Golovkin, earning himself a six-month suspension and casting even more doubt over the result of their draw.
“If the people want another [Golovkin] fight, we’ll do it again, and I’ll beat him again. That’s why I’m here. That’s what I was born for. To defend what’s mine. I’ll fight anyone.” Alvarez said.
Alvarez unified the middleweight division with a points victory over Daniel Jacobs in Las Vegas. He now beaten just once in 55 fights – took Jacobs’ IBF belt to add to his own WBC and WBA titles.
The Mexican icon will return to the ring on September 14th with WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev mentioned as a leading candidate to be his next opponent.
