Cyril Abiteboul, Renault F1 Boss, is not comfortable with the new formation of Racing Point.
Abiteboul does not ruled out the escalation of issue to a legal and formal platform challenging the legality of Pink Mercedes. He also questioned the originality of the Racing Point Formula 1 team.
Racing Point shocked Formula 1 teams when it unveiled its car RP20 for 2020 in pre-season testing. The design of their new car was similar to that of Mercedes title winning W10 during 2019.
New designed shocked many in the sport and raised questions over its legality. Competitive teams are not contended with regulatory authority to allow cloning. However, Racing Point insisted that team has abide all the sport regulations.
Additionally, more concerns were raised around different team collaborations. The reservations sparked over how those collaborations could hurt those independent teams and their resolve to remain independent.
Renault was affiliated to speculations, during Australian Grand Prix, to take this case seriously. The reports suggested that Renault is considering official protest over the matter. And it will ask for a direct answer from authorities on what is allowed and what not.
But cancellation of Melbourne GP resulted in hindrance to it. Resumption of F1 season will show how much this issue is escalated and how it will settle.
Although, the issue has been put on hold Abiteboul showed his concerns on French television. He compared Racing Point to an artist who copy others work to sell himself.
“They’ve got great photographers, that’s for sure,” he told Canal Plus.
“But to be fair, I have noticed how they have quite honestly said they copied.
“I think it’s the first time since I joined Formula 1 that someone has been really proud of copying.
“It’s like someone who forges artworks being super happy with the work he’s done.
Abiteboul tried to judge whether the car was worked on the basis of publicly available information or not.
“Yet, it’s not worth the original piece, or the pride of working on an original piece…”
“The main thing to find out is: based on public information, is it possible to do such an accurate and efficient job?” he said. “I won’t go any further at this stage, but it is still something we’re wondering about.”
