Ahead of the French Open, this is Alex Corretja’s hope for Garbine Muguruza

Garbine Muguruza

“Hopefully Garbine Muguruza will revive his best form on clay,” said former world number 2 Alex Corretja, who has revealed his prediction ahead of the 2021 French Open.

Former Spanish national Corretja, who reached the French Open final on two occasions in the 1998 and 2001 seasons, hopes her juniors can create a breakthrough after her heroic stunt five seasons ago when overthrowing US tennis star Serena Williams in the Grand Slam final held in Paris.

The former 47-year-old Corretja also predicts more about this season’s French Open, including defending champion from Poland, Iga Swiatek and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka who recently won the prestigious clay-court tournament at the Madrid Open. by beating world number 1 Ashleigh Barty in the final.

“The opportunities in the women’s singles are more open than ever before, but some players are looking very convincing,” said Corretja.

“Sabalenka and Swiatek look amazing and I hope Garbine Muguruza can also play well. He hasn’t looked convincing in the clay-court season this time, but he looked impressive at the start of the season and can do well.”

Since winning the French Open title in the 2016 season, the best achievement for world number 13 Muguruza in the Grand Slam is appearing in the semifinals of the 2018 season before losing to champion Simona Halep in straight sets.

Former player who coached Andy Murray, Corretja also reacted to reports about Romanian national Halep who was forced to decide not to compete at Roland Garros, Paris this season due to a calf injury.

“The positive thing for Halep is that he has won a title at Roland Garros,” added Corretja.

“It will make it a little easier to miss the Grand Slam this time, but it will still feel quite heavy. I expect him to become one of the favorites at Roland Garros this season.” “When you lose a tough competitor like him in a tournament, it’s such a shame. He always raises the level of his game, but at the same time, his decisions will open other doors for other players.”
