Manchester United must beat FC Copenhagen if they are to progress to the Champions League knockout stages, according to coach Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United sit bottom of Group A after losing their first two games against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
FC Copenhagen, the Danish champions, visit Old Trafford on Wednesday and Ten Hag says his team must win.
“If you lose the first two games, you have to win,” Ten Hag said at a press conference on Monday.
Ten Hag expects an emotional atmosphere at Old Trafford in United’s first home game since the announcement of the death of Sir Bobby Charlton, aged 86, on Saturday.
“It’s always special, every night at Old Trafford, the fans always support us,” added Ten Hag.
“Remember the last home game against Brentford, even when the game didn’t go our way, they still supported us in the difficult moments.
“In difficult times, the fans are still with us and fighting. “Surely tomorrow, the death of Sir Bobby Charlton – their hero, the legend – will be even more emotional.”
“He was in front of Old Trafford with Denis Law and George Best. He was always with us and they were always a big inspiration for us every day in every game.”
After losing six of their first 10 games of the season, United won back-to-back games with narrow wins over Brentford and Sheffield United.
Ten Hag’s side are looking to win three games in a row for the first time since May and full-back Diogo Dalot hopes their small comeback can be a springboard to help turn things around.
“Every game for us is an opportunity to show that we want to build confidence, build momentum,” said Dalot, who scored the winner against Sheffield United on Saturday.
“When you win games it’s easier to get that confidence and we’ve shown that in this game when you don’t play the way you want you have to find a way to win. We’ve shown that quality, we have fantastic players who can go out and perform and win games. We have to use this win to build confidence and momentum.”
