Former world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz faced self-esteem and confidence issues after losing the belt that led him to glory.
On his YouTube channel, the Mexican fighter confessed to having problems with depression after losing the WBC heavyweight title to Anthony Joshua, in what was his last official fight.
“I was depressed, I was mad at myself because I knew I should’ve trained, I knew I should’ve done better in my last fight, but it’s never too late. Now is the beginning to see the real and new Andy Ruiz Jr,” Ruiz said.
“Now it’s more motivation, being here with more champions, people that are dedicated, I’m excited to be here.” Ruiz added.
Ruiz will face longtime contender and fellow Mexican-American Chris Arreola on a pay-per-view card May 1 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
Hence, his commitment to Arreola is not only about returning to the strings, but about again aspiring to a world championship. He lost weight and improved his technique, as he is faster, has better reflexes and his blows are still just as strong.
“Everyone will see the difference. Everyone will see my hard work, that’s what it’s all about. I’m ready for my next fight. I’m ready, excited, ready to prove everybody wrong.” Ruiz said.
“I have known Chris Arreola since I turned professional. He’s a Mexican warrior just like me, and I expect him to come at me with everything he’s got. This is going to be an action packed event between fighters who do not go backwards.” Ruiz said.
“I will be smart and ready to do whatever it takes to get the win and put myself back in position to become heavyweight champion again.” he added.
