The latest incoming news from the Premier League, Arsenal defeated Everton 1-0 thanks to Leandro Trossard’s winning goal at Goodison Park on Sunday. This is Arsenal’s fourth win from five Premier League matches and has helped them move back into the top four of the league standings. Arsenal are now fourth in the rankings with 13 points.
Trossard, coming in as a substitute in the first half for the injured Gabriel Martinelli, scored in the second-half goal to give Arsenal a narrow victory over Everton who displayed some really impressive defense work throughout the match but failed to attack and create any pressure on their opponents.
The match is noted for a controversial moment in the first half wherein, Martinelli scored the opening goal for Arsenal, but the goal was controversially disallowed when Eddie Nketiah was found to be fractionally offside by VAR earlier in the passage of play, despite the ball only reaching him via a heavy deflection off Everton striker Beto. Despite several protests by the onfield players and Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta, the goal was struck off by the referee.
Martinelli was eventually pulled out due to a hamstring injury after scoring, allowing Everton to finally gain some momentum. Everton had a penalty appeal turned down when Abdoulaye Doucoure went to ground in the box, only for referee Simon Hooper to wave away the home side’s protests. The game became a stop-start affair for the rest of the first half, with neither side able to create clear opportunities
The action kept going back and forth, with Everton making some promising saves with Jordan Pickford working brilliantly to make a crucial save off Martin Odegaard. Arsenal continued to pour forward but Everton offered stiff resistance, with center-backs James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite defending bravely and making a succession of vital blocks.
Arsenal continued to probe ahead in the second half, taking a corner spot in the 69th minute and working the ball quickly to Saka on the right-hand side of the box who cut back the ball to Trossard to brilliantly hook the ball into the far corner past the despairing Pickford, scoring the solitary goal of the match.
The goal helped Arsenal secure a long-awaited victory at Goodison Park which pushed them to the fourth spot in the points table. With 13 points from five matches, the Gunners are now in the fourth spot behind Manchester City, Tottenham, and Liverpool. While Manchester City is comfortably sitting on top with 18 points, Totts, Liver, and Arsenal all have 13 points each, with the latter falling behind on goal difference.
As for Everton, they are yet to win a match in the current Premier League campaign and are still unable to move out of the relegation zone, placed in the 18th spot. Burnley and Luton are the only teams with them in the Relegation bracket and are also yet to pick up a point. Sheffield United has narrowly passed relegation due to a superior goal difference but is yet to win a match.
