Arsenal win amidst protests

Arsene Wenger under the pump from disappointed Arsenal fans

As the season enters it closing weeks, things seem to be getting tighter at the top as Manchester City and Arsenal make strides for the third spot and European Qualification. Arsenal took a giant step in this regard on Saturday by beating a resilient Norwich 1-0 at the Etihad. Despite a win, the over all atmosphere at the stadium was not pleasantly welcoming for Arsene Wenger. Fans from Arsenal Supporter’s Trust, Red Action Movement and the Black Scarf Movement handed out protest cards to fans during the game to mark their displeasure over Arsene Wenger’s managerial regime. Many of the cards read

“Arsene thanks for the memories, but it’s time to say goodbye”

“Every good story has an ending – Wenger out”

“Support the team, not the regime – Wenger out”

While there were those who protested, there were a majority who didn’t partake in the protest.

“Proud of Arsene, ashamed of fans” – A card in favour of Wenger held out by a supporter.

Majority of the protests owed to the fact that Arsenal have failed to win the league for the last twelve years. That coupled with only a Champions League final and numerous Quarter and Semi-final exits with a couple of FA Cup titles, the dozen or so years have not brought the Gunners any remarkable silverware. Despite Chelsea, Manchester United or Liverpool (usually the top contenders) not doing well this season – Arsenal still find themselves fighting for third spot.

In his post-match remarks Wenger acknowledged the fan’s displeasure

“It was a bit of a strange atmosphere. I think the fans were behind the team, and I believe as well that we did not have the stylish performance that could raise people off their seats”

“Maybe it is as well because we have been remarkably consistent. This season was a bit special because we were in a position for a long time where our fans believed we could win the league”

“We respect the opinion of everybody. We gave absolutely the best,” said Wenger, whose team moved up to third.

“I’m really sorry I cannot make them all happy but we will continue to work hard to achieve it.”

Arsenal now face Manchester City who trail them by three points and have a game in hand. Will the Gunners end up being at the cursed fourth spot again this season? Only time will tell.
